Well, we did it. We lost 3 out of 4 at home to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Congratulations team. Actually, I'm a little proud of the Mets offense. They came back, and scored 5 runs off of Dan Haren, one of baseball's better pitchers. Nelson Figueroa, who will be DFA'ed today was horrible. 1.2 innings, 10 hits, 1 walk, 6 runs. And then Tim Redding went 3.1, gave up 2 hits, no runs, and struck out 2. In hindsight, Redding should've started, but in the end Figueroa and Redding are the same. Maybe it was just a bad start for Figgy; if he goes down to AAA and continues to dominate, I'll maintain that it was a start, if he doesn't, I'll shut up about him. Offensively, Pagan hit triple number 6 (in 128 ABs, he's projected for 16), Castillo and Wright both had 2 run singles, and Daniel Murphy hit home run number 7. He has hit 4 of his 7 homers as a first baseman, but has a line of .238/.307/.378 while playing first. However, if he hits 3-8 more in the year, I would consider him for next year. The bullpen did a good job tonight, going 7.1 scoreless, with Parnell going 2 scoreless, Stokes 1.1, and Feliciano the other .2 in addition to Redding's 3.1. The Mets had a chance to tie the game in the 8th, when Sheff was at second with one out, but Murphy fouled out, and then Francoeur swung at the first pitch, and grounded out. Jeff Francoeur saw 6 pitches all game. This is a recurring theme, and out of all active Mets, he is second in O-Swing %, which is the percentage of pitches outside of the strikezone that the batter has swung at. It is calculated at fangraphs.com, and can be found for the Mets here.
Stupid Decision of the Day: Jeff Francoeur swinging at the first pitch in the 8th. Patience, Frenchy. If you have a longer at bat, better pitches will come. At this point, if I'm pitching to Frenchy, I just pitch way outside. And apparently he saw the Mets scouting report on him, which he found"scary". He still hasn't changed his approach.
Random Thought of the Day: Please please please tell me why Nick Evans is not up? We have Sullivan and Reed. They're both really sucky, can't Evans be up for one of them?
Clutch Play of the Day: Murphy homer in the 6th. +13.6 WPA. I like Murph. I got the green Daniel Murphy designed tee-shirt.
Up Next for the Mets: 2 game series with St Louis. 7:10 ET
Johan Santana (12-8 2.96 ERA, 3.70 FIP, 3.53 tRA) looks to pitch like he did in his last start against certified Met Killer Joel Pineiro.
Joel Pineiro (9-9 2.84 ERA, 2.87 FIP, 2.90 tRA)
