Elmer Dessens (3.64 ERA, 5.89 FIP, 6.19 tRA) has been designated for assignment. The Mets have gone back to a full bench, and called up Robinson Cancel from AAA (.218/.266/.259 in AAA Buffalo, translated to a .205/.250/.241 line) because Brian Schneider's knee is sore. Surgery is on Monday.
So Tim Redding, and his $2.25 million guaranteed contract, who has been marginally better than Dessens (Dessens has been lucky, which is indicated by the high FIP, tRA, and the .196 BABIP when his career mark is .311) gets to stay. Just for fun, Tim Redding's line: 7.03 (!!, ZiPS, from Fangraphs predicts a 5.33 Rest of season) ERA, 5.31 FIP, 6.65 tRA, and a .326 BABIP, which is near his career norm. Really, they both should go and the Mets should use either Figueroa or Livan Hernandez as the long man.
